64 Mérida Classical Theater Festival: “Electra” by Antonio Ruz

kite-surf-1

In this seventh year of directing at the head of the National Ballet of Spain, I consider that it is the ideal time to face a new challenge, a dramatic and plot work, developed through dance, with the complexity and responsibility that this entails.

My continuous desire to enrich and develop the interpretive capacity of the versatile artists of the National Ballet of Spain has led me to meet Antonio Ruz, a contemporary creator also trained in Spanish Dance, who has known how to draw from each one of us, not only our movement, but also the soul of our personalities.

When Antonio Ruz offered me the title of Electra, I found it very attractive and suggestive: a universal title, but not very exploited within the world of dance. My only premise was that, in addition to marking his personality as a creator, our culture, our roots and our customs would be breathed throughout the work, which is why it was decided that this Electra would be set in rural Spain in the 20th century.

The influence of flamenco and Spanish Dance is captured in the work by the choreographic collaboration of Olga Pericet, who has impregnated passages of the work with her personal style as a creator.

The dramatic development has been adapted by Alberto Conejero, the music that accompanies each of the scenes has been conceived in a totally descriptive way by Pablo Martín Caminero and Moisés Sánchez, and the flamenco composition by guitarist Diego Losada.

This ballet is a new challenge for the National Ballet of Spain. A visceral and human Electra, who speaks from the depths of her heart in search of freedom.
