What to visit in El Puerto de Santa María

The Largest Church Priory

Legends

Without a doubt, Prioral also hides its legends. In his case, in underground tunnels. And it is that, as legend has it, under the Priory church there are tunnels that connect with the Castillo de San Marcos or even go to the beach of La Puntilla. It is said, or heard, that it was for defensive reasons, at the time of the War of Independence. However, thanks to their category of legends, we will not be able to know for sure of their existence.

The Castillo de San Marcos

The Castillo de San Marcos in El Puerto de Santa María is built from an old Islamic mosque that was transformed into a fortified church in the times of Alfonso X El Sabio around the year 1264, who reinforced its foundations using the remains of a Roman building next, providing it with vaulted roofs and fortifying the sanctuary with four towers, two with a hexagonal floor plan and the other two with a quadrangular floor plan, the ground floor of the former being used as the main chapel for the Virgen de los Milagros.
