Our motorhome heads today to one of the world capitals of motorsports: the city of Le Mans. We all know this corner of France thanks to the famous Le Mans 24 Hour Circuit, but you probably didn't know that there are many other places of interest that you should visit if you travel there. Of course, in Áreas Autocaravanas We are going to tell you about them so that you can write them down on your list of travel recommendations, including our proposal to spend the night in a space enabled for you and your vehicle.
First stop: the impressive Cathedral
The Le Mans city tour begins at Saint-Julien Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece that includes Romanesque and, above all, Gothic elements. It stands out for being one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, being visible from many points in the city. Although you will see it quite a bit from a distance, you cannot stay without approaching and entering, since its interior is also an artistic spectacle that will leave you with your mouth open.
The Cité Plantagenêt, a Le Mans of other times
In the surroundings of the Saint-Julien Cathedral you will feel like you are traveling to the past among the buildings and cobblestone streets of the historic helmet, which is called Cité Plantagenêt. Not only does it bring together a multitude of places of medieval origin, but even its shops seem from another era. Believe us, you will be surprised by the look of this neighborhood. Among the most famous houses are the Red Pillar House (quite a symbol of the city) or the Hanging House, which, as its name indicates, is suspended in the middle of a street, like a covered bridge. You will recognize it by its peculiar condition and by the famous teddy bear that appears from one of its windows.
As it could not be otherwise in a historical space like this, its alleys and squares hold countless legends in which we recommend you immerse yourself in to learn more details about the history of the city of Le Mans.
History continues on the Roman wall
We go further back into the past and arrive at the Roman era, from which the wall dates, which today still preserves a polychromy dominated by peculiar geometric shapes.
Toue ride along the Sarthe River
This river bathes the city and is one of its main attractions. You can take a ride in the traditional ropes, typical Le Mans boat, and sail through the waters of the Sarthe to see Le Mans from another point of view.
Time for leisure at La Visitation
The former convent of La Visitation is today a leisure space where there are many shops and restaurants in a very charming set. In addition, it has several points of interest from a cultural point of view, as we will see below.
The cultural value of the city of Le Mans
In addition to being historical, Le Mans stands out for being a cultural focus in several points of interest:
- Without leaving La Visitation, we find two places where art meets. On the one hand, the International Funds of Current Art, a contemporary space that is renewing its works. On the other hand, the store At the Heart of Artists offers works by local artisans and artists of all kinds.
- During some years of his childhood, the city of Le Mans welcomed Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of 'The Little Prince'. Today you can visit his place of residence, where mentions of the famous book abound.
- Another of the cultural references of Le Mans is the comic, a type of work that is very widespread in the city and that you can find in all its bookstores, occupying a prominent place.
- The new part of the city brings together all types of works of urban art. Let's see how many you find!
And of course the circuit
Also known as La Sarthe Circuit, hosts one of the most famous automobile tests in the world: the 24 hours of Le Mans. Every year, thousands of people come to witness this test where the pilots must demonstrate formidable resistance.
If you are visiting the city of Le Mans at another time of the year, you can also enjoy the essence of this race in the circuit museum. You will find dozens of vehicles, including those that have won the historic test.
