To do in Seville in July

Exhibition “once Upon a time... the Computer science” House of Science

'Once upon a time... computing. From the abacus to the smart city in vignettes and more' is the new temporary exhibition of the Casa de la Ciencia Museum in Seville, of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). An exhibition aimed at the general public that explores the origins and history of computing and combines scientific rigor and humor, thanks to the vignettes created for the occasion by the well-known artist Jorge Crespo Cano, collaborator of the magazine El Jueves.
'Once upon a time... computing. From the abacus to the smart city in vignettes and more' offers a chronological and thematic vision of the proposed topic, through two complementary routes that include important events, relevant figures and key objects in the history of computing.

Likewise, the collection includes pioneering pieces in their field, such as the first laptop (1981), weighing 12 kg, and the first INTEL D4004 model microprocessor (1971); the largest and smallest slide rules in history; a comparison of hard drives of all sizes; a wide representation of the first video game consoles... and a long etcetera. Twenty panels with vignettes by Jorge Crespo Cano present the history of computing in a rigorous yet entertaining and humorous manner.
Starting in February, one of the most valuable pieces that will create the greatest expectation will be added to the exhibition. It is an Enigma machine, provided by the Military Museum of Seville (Ministry of Defense), which was used during the Spanish Civil War to encrypt messages.
It will remain in the Museum from December 2 to July 31, 2017

The rib of Santa Clara, exhibition by Manuel Leónbackground-motorhomes_web

background-motorhomes_web

The work of Manuel León (Villanueva del Ariscal, Seville, 1977) strongly favors real leaves. Of the five gardens classified as historical in the city of Seville, the one known as “Jardín de la Torre de Don Fadrique” is the most hidden, the least known. So, doing a whole exercise of discovery between scientific, popular and artistic, this exhibition wants to relocate a plant. In a world where the natural tendency of humans is leading us to the murder of nature, Manuel León recognizes, in a micropolitical key, a century-old plant. (read more)

Relationship with Year Murillo

Manuel León, heir to the Sevillian tradition, has worked, naturally, under the references and imagery of both the Baroque and 16th century Dutch painting. Multiple references appear in his works and in this exhibition it is crucial, as will appear in the studies commissioned for the catalogue, the references to the Immaculate Conception of Soult by Murillo, that iconic and timeless representation and to the paintings that decorated the ephemeral architecture such as the one commissioned by Justino de Neve to Murillo for Santa María la Blanca.

The works of Manuel León for this exhibition transcend an ornamental plant such as La Costilla de Adán to the category of divinity, a kind of analogy to the act of sanctification that is carried out in the work of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo when the painter elevates a young woman from Seville to the status of mother of the Christian god. Likewise, in León's paintings you can find nods to other crucial works by the Sevillian artist such as Saint Tomás de Villanueva Distributing Alms, a masterpiece in terms of composition that is in the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville and is part of one of the star projects of the celebration of the Murillo Year in Seville, as it is a painting from the series of the Capuchin convent.

A garden to paint, Sorolla at CaixaForum

To do in Seville in July

Sorolla was always a lover of nature and, as a special form of it, of gardens. His hobby grew with knowledge of Andalusian gardens, mainly the Alcázar of Seville and the Alhambra of Granada, which he painted numerous times. Based on these gardens, Sorolla conceived his own, which he would begin to make a reality in 1910, when he built his house. It is a Mediterranean garden where the features of Italian Renaissance gardening are mixed with Hispano-Arabic, as in fact occurs especially in the Alcázar of Seville.

In these Andalusian gardens, Sorolla admires the combination of
architecture and vegetation, the color of the flowers, the sensuality of their aromas and the constant presence of water, the murmur of the fountains and the fascinating effects of the reflections in the still waters of the pools
