Many parents with the arrival of the christmas holidays are considering doing a family escape in Motorhome and tour our country. When it comes to making a long road trip, and especially if you are traveling with children, planning is paramount.
Especially knowing that Spanish children take an average of only 25 minutes to start getting bored in the car, according to a study carried out by the manufacturer of car navigation systems, TomTom. Similarly, we are also not surprised that the perennial question, “How much left?” has an international scope. Note that although our children are not the most patient in Europe, in fact, the small German neighbors win with their 31 minutes, we still have to console English parents with their 24 minutes of car peace.
First of all, when traveling as a family, safety is always the most important matter. All children under 12 years of age must have an approved and correctly fastened seat. Likewise, it must be remembered that only from 145 cm tall they can wear the belt like the rest of the adults.
It is also recommended that all babies whose weight is less than 13 kilos travel against the march to avoid serious injuries in the event of an accident. Also, in the motorhome it is recommended to place the approved chair on the dining room in the opposite direction to the march.
However, and if it is our first adventure as a family, we should consider renting this type of recreational vehicle before making a large financial investment, since not all families end up enjoying long road trips.
Small measures that will help to the peace of the family
Neither haste nor goals exist in the minds of children. In other words, it is better to be fully aware that the arrival time will depend on the inconveniences that arise along the route, as well as the number of stops that the little ones in the house need.
Regarding toys, it is better to choose the lightest and least noisy ones. You won't be the first parent to end up carrying toys around. You can always bet on your imagination and on traditional games such as “I see, I see”, counting cars, stars, etc.
There's nothing like your favorite cartoon or movie to beat the dreaded boredom. Another option is to download a learning application adapted to their age on your smartphone, an interesting alternative to continue learning even while traveling.
On the other hand, proper hydration and nutrition is essential. We will try to bring water, smoothies, juices, and we will offer them to you along the way. The positive part is that carrying the house on your back will make it easier for us to go to the bathroom frequently.
In this sense, the little ones should feel full after each meal. However, we should not allow them to eat too much in order to avoid possible dizziness or vomiting. It would also do us no harm to have some snacks on hand in case they ask us for something to snack between meals.
Finally, let's not forget the benefits of traveling for children. The Sant Joan de Déu University Hospital, specializing in paediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, states that: ”children, through good times with the family, develop more rational, reflective and critical thinking and, in addition, acquire new values and skills of the kind emotional and social, among others”. Apparently, we already have a good excuse to get out of our daily routine, and that is that anything is done for a child, or so they say.
